TELEHEALTH OVERVIEW

Telehealth is the delivery of healthcare and education at a distance using live, two-way videoconferencing technology.  Telehealth enhances the ability to provide and receive patient care and education regardless of geographic location.

Using Telehealth technology, patients that are living in remote or rural areas are capable of receiving specialized medical care from healthcare professionals not only within Saskatchewan’s provincial Telehealth network, but also nationally and internationally.

Telehealth Saskatchewan’s vision is to provide optimal healthcare for anyone, anywhere, anytime enabled by information and communication technology.  The mission is to improve the quality and accessibility of health services and health information for all people in our province.  Telehealth is partnered with all twelve health regional authorities within Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Health and Health Canada.

Telehealth offers three main areas of service (listed in order of priority):
  1. Patient Clinical Services
    • Patient Clinic:  patients can be linked via videoconference to a healthcare provider at a distant location (example:  patient in Assiniboia speaks with Oncologist in Winnipeg).
    • Client Case Conferencing:  healthcare team in one location meets with healthcare team in distant location (example: a rehabilitation health team in Regina speaks to a rehabilitation team in Moose Jaw about a client transferring to their area).
    • Patient Education:  healthcare providers can provide education to groups of patients at distant locations (example:  Cardiac Rehab Nurse in Moose Jaw provides cardiac rehab education to a group in Moose Jaw while at the same time groups of patients in Assiniboia and Gravelbourg can also participate in the education).

  2. Education Services
    • Healthcare providers, patients and the public can access learning events via Telehealth.

  3. Administrative Meeting Services
    • Connecting healthcare groups for administrative meetings regionally or provincially.
